Voter I.D - Voter Fraud Myth?

The anti-voter I.D. crowd claim that there isn't sufficient voter fraud to warrant the risk of voter suppression, and that Republicans are desperate. (see  HERE and HERE and HERE and HERE)

They also assert that voter fraud is a myth, and is itself a fraud. (see HERE and HERE and HERE and HERE and HERE).

As evidence, they point to an ASU study that concluded: "...analysis of 2,068 alleged election-fraud cases since 2000 shows that while fraud has occurred, the rate is infinitesimal, and in-person voter impersonation on Election Day, which prompted 37 state legislatures to enact or consider tough voter ID laws, is virtually non-existent." (see HERE)

Even if we expect journalism students to provide accurate legal analysis, the problem with the study is that it only looks at reported cases. We have little or no idea how many cases were prevented by the voter I.D. law in question, or more important, how much fraud is undetected because there aren't substantive means for detecting voter fraud. It isn't as if a dog or a dead person who is registered to vote will be notified that someone voted under their registration, and report it.

However, as sardonically intimated in the lead-in meme, identity theft occurs frequently in the U.S. (see HERE and HERE and HERE), and we know this because it is somewhat detectable, though most often after the fact. Yet, there is a substantial amount of identity theft that goes undetected--often involving children and deceased persons (sound familiar?). (see HERE and HERE and HERE and HERE)

Since one of the more common forms of voter fraud consists of voting under a false identity, does it make sense to assume it doesn't occur frequently even though we can't adequately detect it? Liberals seem to "think' so.
